Using the Paper Q&A Feature
The Paper Q&A feature lets you chat naturally with paper content. This guide shows you how to use it to understand papers better.
Getting Started
Opening the Q&A Feature
- Sign in to your DeepPaper AI account
- Go to the paper you want to read
- Click the chat icon in the bottom right to start
Quick Questions with Text Selection
You can also ask questions by selecting text:
- Select any text in the paper that interests you
- A small menu will pop up with an "Explain" option
- Click "Explain" to open the chat window
- The system will automatically ask about the selected text and start answering
This is great for asking about specific concepts, methods, or results without typing questions.
Asking Questions
- Type your question in the chat box at the bottom
- You can ask simple questions like "What are the main findings?"
- Or more complex ones like "What's new about the methods used?"
- Press Enter or click send to submit your question
Getting Answers
- The system starts processing your question right away
- You'll usually get an answer within seconds
- Answers are based on the full paper, including relevant quotes and explanations
Continuing the Conversation
- You can ask follow-up questions based on the answers
- The system remembers what you've talked about
- Note: Each chat supports up to 10 questions. When you reach the limit, you'll need to save the chat to ask more questions
Chat Features
Setting Your Level
At the top of the chat, you can choose your level:
- Beginner: Gets basic, detailed explanations
- Intermediate: Gets medium-depth analysis
- Professional: Gets deeper, more technical analysis
- Expert: Uses the most technical terms and analysis
Pick the level that works for you, and the AI will match its answers to your level.
Saving Chats
To save your current chat and start a new one:
- Click "Archive" at the top of the chat
- Your current chat will be saved
- A new chat will start automatically
- You can see all saved chats by clicking "View History"
Viewing Chat History
- Click "History" at the top of the chat
- You'll see all your chats with this paper
- Click any chat to see its details
- You can download chats or copy their content
About Credits
The Q&A feature uses credits:
- Each question costs a minimum of 1 credit. For detailed rules, please check the Credit System Guide.
- You can't ask questions if you run out of credits
- Check your credit balance in your account settings

Getting Better Answers
- Be Specific: Clear, specific questions get better answers
- One at a Time: Break big questions into smaller ones
- Use Archive: Save your chat when you're near the 10-question limit
- Adjust Your Level: Change your level to get answers that work for you
- Use Text Selection: Select text you don't understand and click "Explain" for quick help
Common Issues
- Answers Too General: Try changing your level or making your question more specific
- Hit Question Limit: Save your chat and start a new one
- Need to Save Chats: Download important chats as Markdown files
